Method
Prepare Fruit & Herb
Muddle
Place the hulled and quartered strawberries, mint leaves, and basil (if using) into a cocktail shaker or mixing glass. Add the simple syrup and use a muddler to gently press and twist until the strawberries release their juices and the herbs become aromatic. Do not over-muddle the mint and basil (avoids bitterness); aim for fragrant bruising.
After muddling, add the fresh lime juice to the muddled fruit and herbs and stir briefly to combine.
Build the Cocktail
Add the rum or vodka to the shaker with the muddled mixture.
Fill the shaker with ice (enough to chill well). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until well chilled and slightly frothy from the fruit.
Serve & Finish
Fill a rocks glass or Collins glass with crushed ice.
Double-strain the shaken cocktail over the crushed ice using a fine mesh strainer to remove pulp and seeds for a smooth drink.
Top with 2 oz club soda (adjust to taste) and gently fold once to combine. Taste and add a splash more simple syrup or lime juice if needed.
Garnish with a strawberry slice threaded onto the rim and a sprig of mint. Optionally slap the mint lightly between your palms before garnishing to release aroma.
