1

Prepare glass

Chill an Old Fashioned glass briefly by filling it with ice water while you build the cocktail, or place it in the freezer for 5–10 minutes.

2

Make blackstrap molasses simple syrup (if you don't have it)

Combine 1/2 cup blackstrap molasses with 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Warm gently, whisking until smooth and slightly reduced, then strain through a fine sieve into a jar. Cool before using. (Yields ~3/4 cup; store refrigerated.)

3

Build the cocktail

Discard the ice water from the chilled glass. In a mixing glass, add 3 oz bourbon, 1/2 oz charred (blackened) rye whiskey, 1/2 oz blackstrap molasses simple syrup, 1/2 oz fermented black cherry liqueur, 3 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters. Add large ice and stir briskly for 30–45 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

4

Finish and garnish

Strain the stirred cocktail over a single large ice cube in the chilled Old Fashioned glass. Express the orange peel over the drink (twist to release oils), rim the glass with the peel, then drop it in. Optionally skewer and add a luxardo or brandied cherry. Serve immediately.

Notes

The 3:1 bourbon to charred rye ratio gives the drink depth and a subtle smoky/blackened edge without overpowering. Adjust sweetness by adding or reducing the blackstrap syrup by 1/4 oz increments. If you can't char rye, substitute a peated rye or a small rinse of Lapsang Souchong-tea-smoked whisky for a similar effect.
