Cocktail
Prep glass (optional)
Place a rocks glass or coupe in the freezer for 5–10 minutes to chill, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with fresh ice.
Add 2 oz Don Julio 1942 tequila, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice, 0.25 oz agave syrup, 0.25 oz orange liqueur (if using), and 1 dash Angostura bitters into the shaker.
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is frosty and well chilled. This both chills and lightly dilutes the drink to balance the high-quality tequila.
Discard ice or water from the chilled glass. Strain the cocktail through a fine strainer or the shaker’s strainer into the chilled rocks glass over one large ice cube or into the coupe without ice, depending on preference.
Garnish with a large lime wheel floated on the rim or a lime twist expressed over the drink, then serve immediately.
Garnish
For a lime wheel: cut a 1/4" thick slice of lime and make a small slit to sit on the glass rim. For a twist: use a vegetable peeler to remove a long strip of lime peel, twist over the drink to express oils, then drop or hang on the rim.
