Bloody Mary Mix (makes ~8 cocktails)

Method

Bloody Mary Mix (makes ~8 cocktails)

1

Make the base mix

In a large pitcher or container, combine 6 cups tomato juice, 2 cups vodka, and 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice. Stir to combine.

2

Season the mix

Add 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish, 2 teaspoons hot sauce, 1 teaspoon celery salt, 1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika, and 1 teaspoon soy sauce (if using). Whisk thoroughly until evenly combined. Taste and adjust: add more hot sauce, horseradish, or Worcestershire to reach desired heat/umami.

3

Chill and store

Cover and chill the mix at least 1 hour (or overnight) to let flavors meld. Keep refrigerated until serving. If making ahead for a bar, transfer to a lidded pour bottle or beverage dispenser and keep cold with ice around the container.

Bar Garnishes — pick and choose

4

Prepare garnish platters before guests arrive. Arrange celery stalks, lemon and lime wedges, pickled green beans, pickled okra, cocktail onions, green olives, cornichons, pickled asparagus, cherry tomatoes, radish slices, jalapeño slices, and fresh herbs in separate small bowls or on trays. Keep shrimp chilled on a bed of ice and keep bacon and salami on a separate platter (bacon can be warm or at room temperature if cooked shortly before).

5

Skewer combinations: provide toothpicks or cocktail picks so guests can build skewered garnishes (e.g., olive + cocktail onion + salami fold; shrimp + lemon wedge; cheese cube + cornichon). Offer small bowls for discarded olive pits and used picks.

Hot Sauce & Spice Options (for bar station)

6

Set out bottles of different hot sauces (Tabasco, chipotle, sriracha) and jars of extra horseradish. Provide small spoons for guests to add horseradish. Place shakers of cayenne, Old Bay, celery salt, and cracked black pepper so guests can customize each glass.

7

Label the sauces/spices if desired so guests know the heat level and flavor profile. Replenish as needed throughout the event.

Rimming & Serving

8

Prepare glass rims

Pour 1/2 cup kosher or celery salt onto a shallow plate and mix with 2 tsp cracked black pepper. Run a lemon or lime wedge around the rim of each chilled highball or pint glass, then dip the rim into the salt/pepper mixture to coat. Set glasses aside.

9

Assemble a cocktail

Fill a rimmed glass with ice (about 1/4–1/3 full). Pour about 3/4 to 1 cup of the Bloody Mary mix (about 6–8 fl oz) over the ice. Stir gently. Let guests customize: add extra hot sauce, horseradish, a squeeze of lemon/lime, or a dash of Old Bay or celery salt. Garnish with chosen items on skewers or tucked into the glass (celery stalk, pickled green bean, olive(s), shrimp, bacon, etc.).

10

For non-alcoholic version: omit vodka and serve the same mix as a virgin Bloody Mary (sometimes called a Virgin Mary). Keep a labeled pitcher or dispenser so guests know which contains alcohol.

11

Keep the bar area tidy by providing napkins, a trash bowl for used skewers, extra ice, and small tongs for garnish handling. Refill garnishes and sauces as necessary.
