Tea Base

Method

Tea Base

1

Heat water

Pour 2 cups of cold water into a small pot or kettle. Heat until it reaches a near-boil (about 200–212°F / 93–100°C). For delicate green or white teas, heat to about 175–185°F (80–85°C) instead.

2

Brew tea

If using loose leaves: place 2 tsp of black tea leaves into an infuser or teapot. If using tea bags: place 1–2 bags into a cup or pot. Pour the hot water over the tea and, if using, add sliced ginger to the water now.

3

Steep

Let the tea steep for 3–5 minutes for black tea (3 minutes for lighter flavor, up to 5 for stronger). If using green tea, steep 1.5–3 minutes. Remove the tea leaves/tea bag (and ginger slices) after steeping to avoid bitterness.

Finishing & Sweetening

4

Add milk

If you prefer milk tea, add 1 tablespoon of milk to the cup and stir gently. Heat can be adjusted before adding milk so the cup is comfortably warm.

5

Sweeten and garnish

Stir in 1 teaspoon sweetener (adjust to taste). If you prefer lemon instead of milk, add a slice of lemon and do not add milk. Taste and adjust sweetness, milk, or lemon as desired.

6

Serve

Serve immediately while hot. Makes one 1-cup serving.
