Pork Belly Preparation
Basting Mixture
Method
Pork Belly Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Pork Belly
Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C). Score the skin of the pork belly in a crosshatch pattern, making sure not to cut into the meat. This will help the fat render and the skin to crisp up. Pat the pork belly dry with paper towels.
- 2
Season the Pork Belly
Rub salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and five-spice powder all over the pork belly, making sure to get the seasoning into the scored areas. Let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Cooking Process
- 3
Bake the Pork Belly
Place the seasoned pork belly on a rack in a roasting pan, skin side up. Bake in the preheated oven for 2 to 2.5 hours until the meat is tender and the fat has rendered.
- 4
Prepare the Basting Mixture
In a small bowl, mix together vegetable oil, honey, and soy sauce. Set aside.
- 5
Crisp the Skin
After the initial baking, increase the oven temperature to 425°F (220°C). Brush the basting mixture over the skin of the pork belly. Bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until the skin is golden brown and crispy. Keep an eye on it to prevent burning.
- 6
Rest and Slice
Remove the pork belly from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before slicing. Cut into bite-sized pieces and serve.
