Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare espresso

Brew 1 ounce of espresso (about a single shot) and let it cool slightly for 1–2 minutes. Ideally use freshly pulled espresso so the crema can form on the finished cocktail. If you don't have an espresso machine, use very strong brewed coffee and allow it to cool to room temperature.

  2. 2

    Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you mix the drink to ensure it's nicely chilled.

  3. 3

    Combine ingredients

Add the Grey Goose vodka, cooled espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice.

  4. 4

    Shake vigorously

Secure the shaker lid and shake very hard for 15–25 seconds. Vigorous shaking chills the drink and emulsifies the espresso, creating a rich, frothy crema on top.

  5. 5

    Strain

Empty the ice or water from your chilled glass. Double-strain the cocktail into the glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer (or pour slowly to keep the foam) to remove ice shards and ensure a smooth texture with a thick foam layer on top.

  6. 6

    Garnish and serve

Float three coffee beans on the foam as a classic garnish. Serve immediately while the crema is fresh.
