Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place a chilled coupe or old-fashioned glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and water to chill while you prepare the drink.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker filled about two-thirds with ice, pour 2 oz Bulleit Bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 1 oz Campari.

  3. 3

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture briskly for 30–45 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted. Aim for a silky, cold texture rather than vigorous shaking.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

If you chilled the serving glass with ice and water, discard the ice water and dry the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail through a julep strainer or the mixing glass into the chilled coupe or into an old-fashioned glass over one large ice cube (or 2–3 fresh large cubes).

  6. 6

    Garnish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel over the glass and giving it a sharp twist skin-side down. Rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the drink (or rest it on the rim).

  7. 7

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy — the Boulevardier should be balanced with warm bourbon, herbal-sweet notes from the vermouth, and Campari's bitter orange backbone.
