Cheeseburger

Optional Condiments

Method

Cheeseburger

1

Form and season patty

Divide the ground beef into a single 4 oz (0.25 lb) portion. Lightly form into a patty about 3.5 inches in diameter and roughly 1/2 inch thick. Do not overwork the meat. Make a shallow dimple in the center with your thumb to reduce puffing. Sprinkle both sides with kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

2

Preheat pan or griddle

Heat a nonstick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat until hot (about 2–3 minutes). If using a griddle, preheat to medium-high. Add a light swipe of oil to the pan if it is not well seasoned (optional).

3

Cook patty

Place the patty in the hot pan. Cook undisturbed for 2.5–3 minutes to develop a brown crust. Flip and cook the second side for 2–2.5 minutes for medium; cook up to 3 minutes for well done. Internal temperature should reach 160°F (71°C) for ground beef safety.

4

Add cheese

During the last 30–45 seconds of cooking, place one slice of American cheese on top of the patty. Cover the pan briefly with a lid or a sheet pan to help the cheese melt, about 30–45 seconds.

5

Toast bun

While the patty finishes, spread 1/2 tsp softened butter on the cut sides of the hamburger bun. Toast, buttered side down, in a separate skillet over medium heat for 30–45 seconds until golden. Alternatively, place under a broiler for 20–30 seconds, watching closely.

6

Assemble

Place the cheese-topped patty on the bottom bun. Arrange 3 dill pickle slices on top of the cheese. Add the top bun. Plate the burger alongside fries and condiments if using.

Fries

7

Oven-baked method (preferred for kids)

Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Toss 1 cup frozen fries with 1 tbsp vegetable oil to lightly coat. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Bake 12–16 minutes, turning once halfway, until golden and crisp. Sprinkle with 1/4 tsp kosher salt immediately after removing from oven.

8

Alternative stovetop method (faster)

Heat 1–2 tbsp vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add frozen fries in a single layer (work in batches if necessary). Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6–8 minutes until crisp and browned. Drain briefly on paper towels and season with 1/4 tsp kosher salt.

Servicing & Condiments

9

Serve the cheeseburger hot with fries on the side. Offer ketchup and mustard for dipping or spreading. For kids, cut the burger in half if desired and place condiments in small ramekins.
