Blue Moon Cocktail

Method

Blue Moon Cocktail

1

Prepare and measure

Chill a coupe or martini glass by filling it with ice water while you prepare the drink. Measure out gin, creme de violette, maraschino liqueur, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and crack the egg to separate the white if you prefer exact control (you can use the whole egg white as listed).

2

Dry shake

Add gin (2 oz), creme de violette (1 tsp), maraschino liqueur (1 tsp), fresh lemon juice (3 tsp), simple syrup (1 tsp), and the egg white to a cocktail shaker. Do not add ice yet. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 15–20 seconds to emulsify and build a silky foam.

3

Wet shake

Open the shaker, add a generous handful of ice, reseal, and shake again very hard for 10–15 seconds until the shaker feels very cold to the touch (this chills and dilutes the drink properly while further whipping the foam).

4

Strain and garnish

Dump the ice water from the chilled glass. Using a fine strainer (or double strain with the shaker’s strainer), pour the cocktail into the chilled coupe. The drink should have a pale violet color and a creamy foam head. Garnish with a lemon twist expressed over the surface (rub the peel around the rim if you like) or drop a brandied cherry onto the foam for a classic look.

5

Serve

Serve immediately. Encourage the drinker to enjoy the aroma from the lemon twist or cherry as they sip — the foam will hold the violet-scented head for a few minutes.
