Method
Cocktail
Chill glass
Place an old-fashioned glass (rocks glass) in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.
Measure and combine
Add 2 oz rye whiskey and 1 oz sweet vermouth to a mixing glass or a cocktail shaker without the striker (something you can stir in).
Prepare serving glass
If you chilled the serving glass with ice water, dump the water and dry the glass. Place one large ice cube or ice sphere into the chilled old-fashioned glass.
Strain
Using a julep or hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared serving glass over the large ice cube.
Garnish
Express the oils of one orange peel over the surface of the cocktail by holding it skin-side down and giving it a firm twist. Run the peeled side around the glass rim and drop the twist into the drink (or discard if preferred).
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the balance of spicy rye, sweet herbal vermouth, and aromatic bitters.
