Combine ingredients
Add 2 tsp Fernet, 1 tsp simple syrup (or 1 tsp granulated sugar), and 1/2 tsp fresh lemon juice into a cocktail shaker.
Add ice and shake
Add about 6 ice cubes to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the outside of the shaker is very cold and properly diluted.
Strain
Double-strain the mixture into a chilled rocks glass (or coupe) either over a single large ice cube or neat, using a fine mesh strainer if using granulated sugar to catch any undissolved bits.
Top (optional)
If desired, gently top with about 1 tablespoon of club soda to add brightness and a slight effervescence.
