Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.

2

Prepare espresso and simple syrup

If using hot espresso, brew and let it cool slightly (or use cold brew). Prepare simple syrup by dissolving equal parts sugar and hot water, then cool. Measure 0.5 oz espresso (or strong cold brew) and 0.25 oz simple syrup.

3

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass or shaker filled halfway with ice, add 1.5 oz Fernet‑Branca, 0.5 oz coffee liqueur, 0.5 oz espresso, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and 2 dashes Angostura bitters if using. Ensure all liquid ingredients are measured accurately.

4

Shake

Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds if using chilled espresso (or 10–12 seconds with cold brew) until the outside of the shaker is very cold and the mixture is well diluted and slightly frothy from the espresso.

5

Prepare glass

Discard ice water from the chilled glass (if used) and strain the cocktail through a fine strainer into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass to remove small ice shards and any espresso grounds or foam solids.

6

Garnish and serve

Express an orange twist over the cocktail by holding the twist skin-side down and giving it a sharp bend to release oils, then run it around the rim and drop it into the drink. Serve immediately.
