1

Prepare glass

Select a chilled old-fashioned (rocks) glass. If desired, add one large ice cube to the glass to pre-chill while you build the drink.

2

Measure and combine

In a mixing glass or pint glass, add 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) Braulio amaro, 2 tablespoons (about 30 ml) rye whiskey, and 1 tablespoon (about 15 ml) sweet vermouth.

3

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with ice (enough to come near the top), and stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotations) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted. If you prefer a softer, more patinated profile, stir an extra 10–15 seconds.

4

Adjust (optional)

Taste a small amount (or add a teaspoon of cold water or soda) if you find the drink too intense; this opens the aromatics and rounds bitterness. Stir briefly to incorporate any added water.

5

Strain and serve

Discard the pre-chill ice from the serving glass if used. Strain the chilled cocktail into the rocks glass over one large ice cube (or fresh ice).

6

Garnish

Express an orange peel over the surface to release oils, rim the glass with the peel, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.
