Method

Equipment & Prep

1

Warm cup

Preheat a 8–12 oz (240–350 ml) coffee cup or mug by rinsing it with hot water, then discard the rinse water. This helps preserve temperature when assembling the drink.

2

Prepare machine

Ensure your espresso machine or espresso brewer is clean, filled with fresh filtered water, and fully warmed up (steam/boiler pressure stable).

Brew Espresso

3

Dose and tamp

Weigh 18 g of freshly ground espresso coffee (fine grind). Distribute evenly in the portafilter and tamp with even pressure to create a flat, compact puck.

4

Pull two shots

Brew 2 shots of espresso (approximately 30 ml total) directly into the warmed cup. Aim for a 25–30 second extraction time from the start of flow; adjust grind if extraction is too fast or slow.

Assemble Americano

5

Add hot water

Pour 120 ml of hot water (about 85–95°C / 185–203°F) into the cup with the espresso. Pour slowly to combine, pouring to the center to preserve a thin crema layer if desired. Typical ratio is about 1 part espresso to 4 parts hot water; adjust to taste.

6

Stir and finish

Gently stir once to integrate espresso and water. If using milk/cream or sugar, add now: 1 tsp sugar (or to taste) and up to 15 ml milk/cream. Stir again until dissolved and combined.

Serve

7

Serve immediately while hot. Optionally provide a small spoon and sugar on the side. Enjoy.
