Sandwich Components

Method

Assembly & Cook

  1. 1

    Prepare bacon

Cook the 6 bacon strips until crisp. Use a skillet over medium heat (6–10 minutes) or bake them on a rimmed baking sheet at 400°F (205°C) for 12–18 minutes until crisp. Transfer bacon to a paper towel–lined plate to drain and cool, then break into halves if desired.

  2. 2

    Toast bread and melt cheese

Heat a clean skillet over medium-low heat. Lightly spread about 1 tablespoon of softened butter or 1/2 tablespoon oil on one side of each of the 4 wheat bread slices. Place 2 slices buttered-side down in the skillet. Divide and layer: on each bottom slice place 4 oz (about half) smoked cajun turkey, then 2 Swiss cheese slices (or one folded if large). Toast on medium-low until the cheese begins to melt and the bread is golden (2–4 minutes). Meanwhile keep the top slices buttered-side up.

  3. 3

    Assemble fresh components

While the cheese is melting, slice the tomato into 1/4-inch rounds and season lightly with 1/8 tsp salt and a pinch of pepper. Halve and pit the avocado, scoop out the flesh and slice or thinly mash it with 1/8 tsp salt and a pinch of pepper. Wash or pat dry the lettuce leaves.

  4. 4

    Finish sandwich

When cheese is melted, remove the two prepared halves from the skillet. Spread 2 tablespoons ranch dressing evenly on the inside of the two top bread slices (buttered-side up). On each bottom slice with melted cheese, layer: 3 oz smoked cajun turkey (if extra), 3 bacon halves, 2–3 tomato slices, a generous portion of sliced or mashed avocado (about 1/2 the avocado per sandwich), and 2 lettuce leaves. Place the ranch-spread top slice onto each sandwich, buttered-side up.

  5. 5

    Final crisp (optional)

If you prefer a crisper grilled exterior, return the assembled sandwiches to the skillet, press gently with a spatula or a sandwich press, and cook 1–2 minutes per side over medium heat until the outside is golden and warm through. Be careful to avoid burning; reduce heat if browning too fast.

  6. 6

    Rest and serve

Remove sandwiches, let rest 1 minute, then cut each sandwich in half on the diagonal. Serve immediately with remaining ranch on the side if desired.
