Black Manhattan

Method

Black Manhattan

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or Nick & Nora glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you build the cocktail (about 3–5 minutes).

2

Measure and combine

In a mixing glass or small pitcher, add 2 oz rye whiskey and 1 oz amaro.

3

Add bitters

Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters and 1 dash of orange bitters to the mixing glass.

4

Add ice and stir

Add 3 large ice cubes to the mixing glass. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 25 full spoon rotations) until the mixture is well chilled and properly diluted (the mixing glass should feel very cold and slightly frosted).

5

Strain

Discard the ice or water from your chilled serving glass. Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, double-strain the stirred cocktail into the chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.

6

Garnish and finish

Express the oils of the orange peel: hold the peel over the drink and give it a firm twist to release the orange oil, then optionally rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass or discard. Garnish with 1 maraschino or brandied cherry skewered or dropped into the drink.

7

Serve

Serve immediately. Recommend sipping slowly to appreciate the bitter-sweet balance between the rye and amaro.
