Method
Prep
Wash and dry lettuce leaves. Slice the tomato into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Thinly slice the red onion. If using avocado, slice it and brush with a little lemon juice or use immediately to prevent browning.
Arrange bread slices on a clean work surface. Spread about 1/2 teaspoon of butter or mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread (total ~2 tbs used across all slices). If toasting in a pan, lightly brush the outside of the bread with olive oil.
Assembly (makes 4 sandwiches)
Layering the Sandwich
Take 2 slices of bread per sandwich, spread side facing down. On the bottom slice, place 2 slices of deli ham and 2 slices of turkey (or your preferred ratio). Add 1 slice of cheddar and 1 slice of Swiss cheese on top of the meats.
Add 1–2 lettuce leaves on top of the cheese. Place 2–3 tomato slices per sandwich (season tomatoes lightly with a pinch of salt and pepper: approximately 1/16 tsp salt and a light grind of pepper each). Add 2 pickle slices and a few thin rings of red onion.
Top with the remaining bread slice, spread side up. Gently press down to compact the sandwich slightly.
Toasting / Finishing (optional)
If you want the cheese melted and the bread crisp: place assembled sandwiches in the preheated skillet. Cook 3–4 minutes per side over medium heat, pressing gently with a spatula, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted. For a panini press, cook according to manufacturer's instructions until heated through.
If serving cold: cut sandwiches in half diagonally or straight down the middle and serve immediately.
Serving
Serve each sandwich with optional sides like chips, a pickle spear, or a small salad. Makes 4 sandwiches (8 halves).
Store leftovers wrapped tightly in plastic wrap or in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours (toasted sandwiches are best eaten immediately).
