Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a cocktail (Martini) glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the drink.

2

Combine ingredients

Add 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 2 dashes aromatic bitters into a mixing glass or a large mixing cup.

3

Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes (enough to come near the top). Stir gently but steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full stirs) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted. The goal is to achieve a cold, slightly viscous texture without over-diluting.

4

Prepare glass and strain

Discard ice water from the chilled cocktail glass (if used) and, using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred mixture into the chilled glass. Use a fine-mesh strainer if you prefer no small ice shards.

5

Garnish and serve

Skewer or drop one maraschino cherry into the drink. Optionally express a lemon twist over the cocktail by pinching it skin-side down above the glass to release oils, then run it around the rim and drop or discard. Serve immediately.
