Coffee + Water
Equipment (included as ingredients to ensure steps cover them)
Method
Coffee + Water
Measure coffee
Measure 2 tablespoons (about 10–12 g) of medium-coarse ground coffee. If you prefer to use a scale, use a 1:17 coffee-to-water ratio — about 12 g coffee to 200 ml water. This recipe uses approximately 12 fl oz (360 ml) water; scale coffee accordingly (≈21 g) if you choose weight measurements instead of tablespoons.
Heat water
Bring fresh filtered water to a boil, then let it rest 30 seconds so the temperature falls to about 195–205°F (90–96°C). For electric drip machines, simply fill the reservoir and let the machine heat the water automatically.
Prepare filter and rinse
Place a paper filter into the dripper or the coffee maker’s filter basket. Rinse the paper filter with hot water to remove papery flavors and preheat the dripper/server or carafe. Discard rinse water.
Add grounds
Put the measured coffee grounds into the rinsed filter, leveling them so the bed is even.
Bloom (for manual pour-over)
If using a pour-over dripper: Start timer and pour just enough hot water (about twice the coffee weight — roughly 40–45 ml) to saturate the grounds evenly. Let bloom for 30–45 seconds to allow trapped CO2 to escape.
Pour remaining water (for manual pour-over)
After bloom, pour the remaining hot water slowly in a circular motion over the grounds, keeping the water level below the top edge of the dripper. Aim to finish pouring by 2:30–3:30 minutes total brew time. Allow coffee to drip through completely.
Electric drip machine brewing
If using an automatic drip coffee maker: place the rinsed filter and grounds into the basket, pour the 12 fl oz (360 ml) water into the reservoir, and start the machine. Brewing should finish in about 4–6 minutes depending on the machine.
Serve
When brewing is complete, remove the dripper or carafe from the heat. Give the brewed coffee a gentle swirl to homogenize, then pour into your mug or server immediately to preserve aroma and temperature.
Adjust to taste
Taste the coffee. If it’s too weak, increase coffee amount slightly (by 0.5–1 tablespoon) or use a finer grind next time. If it’s too strong or bitter, decrease coffee or use a coarser grind, or shorten brew time.
Equipment Care
Discard used grounds and rinse the filter basket or dripper with warm water. If you used a paper filter, compost or trash it. Wipe or rinse the server and kettle. For best flavor, clean equipment regularly to avoid oil buildup.
