Build and stir
Add 2 oz bourbon or rye, 1 oz sweet vermouth, and 1 oz Campari into a mixing glass or a large mixing cup. Fill the mixing glass with enough ice to chill (about 4–6 large ice cubes) and stir briskly for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted (approximately 15–20 full rotations).
Prepare glass
If serving on the rocks: add fresh ice to an old-fashioned glass (1–2 large cubes). If serving up: chill a coupe or martini glass by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice and water while you stir.
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the drink and giving it a sharp twist. Rub the peel around the glass rim and drop it into the drink.
Taste and adjust: the classic Boulevardier is bitter-sweet and spirit-forward. If you prefer it slightly less bitter, use 3/4 oz Campari and 1 1/4 oz vermouth (or increase vermouth to 1 1/4 oz and reduce Campari to 3/4 oz).
