Cocktail
Method
Cocktail
Prep vanilla sugar
In an old-fashioned glass or mixing glass, combine the brown sugar and the scraped seeds from 1/4 of a vanilla bean (reserve the remaining pod for another use). Add 1/2 teaspoon hot water to help dissolve the sugar and gently muddle until the sugar is mostly dissolved and fragrant with vanilla.
Add bitters
Add 3 dashes of Angostura bitters to the sugar and stir briefly to incorporate.
Serve
Strain (if you used a separate mixing glass) into an old-fashioned glass over a large ice cube or place the large ice cube in the prepared glass and pour the stirred cocktail over it.
Garnish
Express an orange peel over the glass to release the oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop the twist into the drink as garnish.
Optional: If you prefer a stronger vanilla note, lightly scrape additional seeds from the reserved portion of the vanilla bean into the sugar next time or infuse a small amount of bourbon with the split vanilla pod overnight and use that bourbon for the cocktail.
