Rose Simple Syrup

Method

Rose Simple Syrup

  1. 1

    Combine and heat

In a small saucepan combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves and the mixture comes just to a simmer.

  2. 2

    Infuse

Add 2 tablespoons dried culinary rose petals to the simmering syrup. Reduce heat to low and let the petals steep gently for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to release aroma and color.

  3. 3

    Finish and strain

Remove the saucepan from heat. Stir in 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice to brighten flavor and help preserve the syrup. Let the mixture cool for 10 minutes, then strain through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean jar, pressing on petals to extract liquid. Discard solids. Chill the syrup completely before using. Yields roughly 1 cup of syrup.

Still Rose Beverage

  1. 4

    Prepare glass

If serving chilled, place a rocks glass or coupe in the freezer 10–15 minutes beforehand or fill with ice to chill and discard ice just before building the drink.

  2. 5

    Build the drink

Add fresh ice to the prepared glass (or leave chilled glass). Pour 1.5 oz vodka (omit for nonalcoholic version), 3 oz white grape juice, 2 tablespoons rose simple syrup, and 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice into the glass.

  3. 6

    Stir and top

Stir gently for 10–15 seconds to combine and slightly chill the drink. If you want a light effervescence, add 1 oz sparkling water and briefly stir once to integrate.

  4. 7

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with an edible rose petal laid on the surface or a thin lemon wheel on the rim. Serve immediately. For a nonalcoholic variation, omit vodka and increase white grape juice to 4 oz and sparkling water to 2 oz if desired.
