Method
Prepare glass
- 1
Optional smoked salt rim
If you want a smoky-salty edge, rub a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks glass and dip the rim into a shallow plate of coarse smoked sea salt. Set the glass aside.
Mix cocktail
- 2
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 3/4 full).
- 3
Add 2 oz Bacardi white rum, 0.5 oz Vida mezcal, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice, 0.5 oz agave syrup, and 0.5 oz orange liqueur to the shaker.
- 4
Add 2 dashes smoked chile bitters (or 2 dashes Angostura + 1 small drop of liquid smoke) to the shaker.
- 5
Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
- 6
Strain the cocktail over a large ice cube or fresh ice into the prepared rocks glass.
Finish & serve
- 7
Express the oils of a grapefruit twist over the drink by holding the twist skin-side down above the glass and giving it a quick squeeze, then drop the twist into the drink (or float a grapefruit wheel on top).
- 8
Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy the interplay of clean rum, bright citrus, and a whisper of mezcal smoke.
