Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Muddle and combine

In a cocktail shaker or mixing glass, add the sliced cucumber, basil leaves and mint leaves. Add the simple syrup and fresh lime juice. Gently muddle the herbs and cucumber 6–8 times: press just enough to release juices and aromatics without pulverizing the herbs (over-muddling makes the drink bitter).

  2. 2

    Add spirits and ice

Add the gin to the shaker, then fill the shaker about two-thirds with ice.

  3. 3

    Shake

Secure the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is well chilled (this both chills and slightly dilutes the cocktail for balance).

  4. 4

    Double-strain

Using a Hawthorne or julep strainer and a fine mesh strainer, double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or martini glass to remove bits of herb and cucumber. If you prefer a bit more texture, you may single-strain.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge and a cucumber ribbon or slice. Optionally slap an extra basil or mint leaf between your hands to release aroma and float it on top. Serve immediately.
