Method
Basic toast
Heat and toast
Choose your toasting method: toaster, oven broiler, or stovetop. If using a toaster, place 2 slices of bread in the toaster and toast to your preferred level (light to dark) — typically 2–4 minutes depending on toaster and bread thickness. If using an oven broiler, place bread on a baking sheet, set broiler to high, position rack 4–6 inches from heat, and broil 1–2 minutes per side, watching closely to avoid burning. For stovetop, heat a dry skillet over medium heat and cook bread 1–2 minutes per side until golden and crisp.
Butter and season
As soon as the bread is toasted, spread 1 tablespoon softened butter evenly over one side of each slice so it melts into the hot toast. If you like, sprinkle a pinch (about 1/4 tsp total) of salt over the buttered toast to enhance flavor.
Optional toppings (choose any)
Jam or nut butter
Spread 2 teaspoons of jam or 2 teaspoons of peanut butter evenly over the buttered toast. For a combo, spread nut butter first, then a thin layer of jam on top.
Avocado toast
Mash 1/2 cup ripe avocado with a fork until mostly smooth. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon olive oil and a pinch of salt and pepper if desired. Spread the mashed avocado over the buttered toast. Finish with a sprinkle of red pepper flakes or cracked black pepper (about 1/8 tsp).
Tomato and cheese
Place 2 slices of tomato on the buttered toast, season lightly with salt and pepper, and top with 1 ounce sliced or grated cheese. If you prefer melted cheese, place prepared toast under a broiler for 30–60 seconds until the cheese softens and bubbles; watch constantly to prevent burning.
