Method

Preparation and equipment

1

Gather equipment

Gather a burr grinder (recommended), digital scale, gooseneck kettle, French press or drip brewer, timer, spoon, and pre-warmed carafe or thermal server.

2

Heat the water to 92–96°C (197–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring water to a boil and let sit for 30 seconds.

Brewing (French press method - yields ~12 cups)

3

Measure and grind

Weigh 37.5 g (0.0375 kg) of organic decaf whole-bean coffee on the scale. Grind to a coarse, uniform grind slightly courser than sea salt suitable for French press.

4

Preheat and add coffee

Preheat the French press by rinsing with hot water, then discard rinse water. Add the ground coffee to the French press.

5

Bloom / pre-infusion

Pour 0.5 cups (approx. 120 ml) of the hot filtered water evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Start the timer and allow the coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds. Gently stir once to break up dry pockets.

6

Add remaining water

After bloom, pour the remaining hot water (about 11.5 cups / the remainder of the 12 cups total) steadily into the press to the desired level, ensuring even saturation. Place the lid on with the plunger pulled up.

7

Steep

Allow the coffee to steep for 4 minutes (adjust between 3.5–5 minutes to taste). If you prefer a slightly stronger cup, extend to 4.5–5 minutes; for a cleaner cup, shorten slightly.

8

Plunge and serve

After the steep time, gently press the plunger down with steady, even pressure. Immediately pour the brewed coffee into a pre-warmed carafe or serve directly into cups to avoid over-extraction and bitterness.

9

Optional: Add milk, sugar, or cream to taste. If adding milk, steam or heat the milk separately and add 0.5 cup per serving as desired. Stir in sugar (1 tsp) or heavy cream (1 tbsp) if you prefer a richer cup.

Cleanup

10

Discard grounds (compost if possible). Rinse the French press thoroughly and wash with warm, soapy water. Allow to dry before reassembling.
