Cold Brew Concentrate
To Serve
Method
Cold Brew Concentrate
Combine
Place 1 cup coarsely ground coffee in a clean 1- to 2-quart jar or pitcher. Pour 4 cups cold, filtered water over the grounds, making sure all grounds are saturated. Stir gently for 10–15 seconds to ensure even wetting.
Steep
Cover the container with a lid or plastic wrap. Let the mixture steep at room temperature or in the refrigerator for 12 to 18 hours. (12 hours yields a lighter concentrate; up to 18 hours yields a stronger flavor.)
Strain
After steeping, strain the coffee through a fine-mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter, cheesecloth, or a nut milk bag into another container. If necessary, strain a second time to remove remaining fine sediment. You should end up with roughly 3 to 4 cups of cold brew concentrate.
Store
Transfer the concentrate to a sealed bottle or jar and refrigerate. It will keep well for up to 7 days, though best within 3–5 days.
To Serve
Fill a glass with about 1 cup ice cubes.
Pour 1/2 to 3/4 cup cold brew concentrate over the ice (adjust to preferred strength).
Add simple syrup or sweetener to taste (start with 2 tsp), stir gently, and taste. Adjust dilution or sweetener as desired.
Serve immediately. If storing assembled drinks, keep refrigerated and consume within 24 hours; iced drinks are best fresh.
