Method
Brewed Coffee
Measure and grind
Measure 1 tablespoon (about 0.033 cups) of whole coffee beans per 8 fl oz cup. Grind to a medium-coarse grind for pour-over or drip, or medium-fine for a cone filter. Use a burr grinder if available for consistent particle size.
Heat water
Heat filtered water to 195–205°F (about steaming but not boiling) — roughly 30 seconds off a rolling boil. For one cup, heat about 8 fl oz.
Rinse filter (if using)
If using a paper filter in a drip or pour-over, pour hot water through the paper to rinse and preheat the brewer, then discard the rinse water.
Bloom
Place ground coffee into your brewer. Pour just enough hot water (about twice the weight of the grounds; roughly 30–40 ml) to wet all grounds and let sit for 30–45 seconds to degas (bloom).
Brew
Continue pouring the remaining hot water in a slow, circular motion (for pour-over) or start the drip machine. Aim for a total brew time of 3–4 minutes for pour-over/drip. For immersion methods (French press), pour all water, stir gently, steep 4 minutes, then press slowly.
Serve
When brewing is complete, pour coffee into a cup. If you preheated your cup, discard any remaining rinse water before pouring.
