Method
Preparation
Preheat cup (optional)
If you prefer the Americano stay hot longer, pour about 1 oz (30 ml) of hot water into the serving cup, swirl to warm the ceramic, then discard the water.
Brew espresso
Pull espresso
Grind fresh coffee to a fine espresso grind and dose for two shots (typically 18–20 g for a double, but equipment varies). Tamp evenly and lock the portafilter into a preheated espresso machine. Brew two shots (about 2 oz / 60 ml total) of espresso directly into the warmed cup or into a separate shot glass if you preheated and discarded water.
Assemble Americano
Add hot water
Heat fresh filtered water to 185–205°F (85–96°C). Pour approximately 6 oz (180 ml) of hot water into the cup with the espresso. For a traditional Americano, add water to espresso (espresso first, water second) to preserve espresso crema and flavor. Adjust water volume to taste for a stronger or milder cup.
Stir and finish
Gently stir once to integrate espresso and water. Taste and, if desired, add sweetener (about 1 tsp simple syrup or sugar) and stir to dissolve. Optionally add a splash (1 oz / 30 ml) of steamed or warm milk for a 'white Americano,' or a tablespoon of cold creamer for richness.
Serve
Serve immediately while hot. Provide a teaspoon for stirring and any additional sweetener or milk on the side.
