Preparation
- 1
Clean the Clams
Rinse the fresh whole belly clams under cold water to remove any sand or debris. Place them in a bowl with water and add 1 tsp of salt. Allow them to soak for about 20 minutes, then drain and rinse again.
Batter Mixing
- 2
Prepare the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour, 1 cup of cornstarch, 1 tsp of baking powder, 1 tsp of garlic powder, and 1 tsp of paprika. Whisk the dry ingredients together until well blended. Gradually add in 1 cup of cold water, whisking until the batter is smooth and has no lumps.
Frying
- 3
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat 2 cups of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- 4
Fry the Clams
Once the oil is hot, dip the cleaned clams into the batter, ensuring they are well coated. Carefully place them into the hot oil in small batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Serving

Plate the Dish
Serve the fried clams hot with lemon wedges and tartar sauce on the side for dipping.
