Method

Preparation of Clams

  1. 1

    Clean the Clams

Rinse the fresh whole belly clams under cold running water to remove any sand and debris. Drain and set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Breading

In a bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir until well combined.

  3. 3

    Make the Batter

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients and stir until a smooth batter forms.

Frying the Clams

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 5

    Dip the Clams

Take each clam and dip it into the batter, ensuring it is well coated.

  3. 6

    Fry the Clams

Carefully place the coated clams in the hot oil, frying them in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  4. 7

    Drain Excess Oil

Using a slotted spoon, remove the fried clams from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.

Preparing the Sides

  1. 8

    Cook the French Fries

Prepare the French fries according to your preferred method (frying or baking) until they are crispy and golden.

  2. 9

    Prepare the Coleslaw

In a bowl, mix the coleslaw ingredients together (shredded cabbage, carrots, and dressing) until well combined. Refrigerate until serving.

Serving

  1. 10

    Plate the Dish

Serve the fried clams with a side of French fries and coleslaw. Optionally, serve with lemon wedges and tartar sauce.
