Method

Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place an Old Fashioned (rocks) glass in the freezer or fill with ice water to chill while you prepare the drink (optional, 3–5 minutes).

2

Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass add 2 oz Woodford Reserve bourbon, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and 0.25 oz simple syrup. If using the sugar-cube variation instead of simple syrup, dissolve ½ sugar cube with a 0.25 oz splash of water and 2 dashes bitters in the glass or mixing glass before adding bourbon.

3

Stir with ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes, then stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 revolutions) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted.

4

Prepare serving glass

Discard ice water from the chilled rocks glass if used. Add one large ice cube (or a few large cubes) to the glass.

5

Strain

Strain the chilled bourbon mixture over the large ice cube in the prepared glass using a julep or Hawthorne strainer.

6

Express and garnish

Take an orange peel, hold it over the drink skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the surface, and give it a firm pinch to express the oils across the surface. Run the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

7

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate aroma, balance and warm spice of the Woodford Reserve.
