Method
Cocktail
Combine ingredients
Chill a rocks glass by filling it with ice or placing it in the freezer. In a mixing glass add 2 oz Wild Turkey Rare Breed, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz Averna (or other amaro), 0.25 oz orange curaçao and 2 dashes Angostura bitters.
Stir
Fill the mixing glass with large, cold ice and stir the mixture for about 30–45 seconds (roughly 20–30 full strokes) until well chilled and slightly diluted — the drink should be clear and cold.
Prepare glass and strain
Discard ice from the chilled rocks glass and place one large ice cube in it. Strain the mixed cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube.
Express oils and garnish
Hold an orange peel over the cocktail and give it a firm twist (skin side down) to express the oils over the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally add a Luxardo or brandied cherry on a pick.
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the high-proof bourbon balanced by sweet vermouth and bitter amaro.
