Prep
Preheat oven
Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Position a rack in the center of the oven.
Wash asparagus under cold running water to remove any grit. Pat dry thoroughly with a kitchen towel or paper towels. Trim the woody ends: hold a spear and bend until it snaps, then line up the rest and cut at that length (or trim about 1 to 1.5 inches from the bottom).
Place trimmed asparagus on a rimmed baking sheet in a single layer, tips pointing the same direction for even roasting. If spears are very thick, slice them lengthwise in half to ensure even cooking.
Season & Roast
Zest the lemon directly over the asparagus to capture aromatic oils, then squeeze 1 tbsp lemon juice evenly over the spears.
Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and roast for 10–14 minutes, depending on thickness: thin spears 8–10 minutes (tender-crisp), medium 10–12 minutes, thick 12–14 minutes (tender with slight browning). Halfway through (at about 6–7 minutes for medium), shake the pan or turn spears with tongs for even browning.
Finish & Serve
Remove asparagus from the oven when tips are slightly browned and spears are tender. Transfer to a serving platter.
While still hot, sprinkle 2 tbsp grated Parmesan over the asparagus if using. Add a pinch (or up to 1 tsp) red pepper flakes for heat if desired. Taste and adjust seasoning with a light additional pinch of salt or a squeeze of lemon if needed.
Serve immediately as a side dish. Leftovers keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat briefly in a 400°F (200°C) oven for 5–7 minutes to refresh.
