Cocktail

1

Chill glass

Place a rocks glass or coupe in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you mix the drink to chill the vessel.

2

Measure and combine

In a mixing glass add 2 oz Bulleit Rye whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters (if using). If you prefer the cocktail slightly sweeter, add 1/4 tsp simple syrup.

3

Add ice and stir

Add 6 large ice cubes to the mixing glass. Stir gently and consistently for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full rotation strokes) until the mixture is well chilled and slightly diluted, and the outside of the mixing glass feels cold.

4

Prepare glass

If you chilled your serving glass with ice water, discard the ice water and dry the glass. If you used the freezer method, remove the glass from the freezer.

5

Strain

Using a julep or Hawthorne strainer, strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the chilled rocks glass (or coupe) over one large ice cube or neat, according to preference.

6

Garnish and finish

Express an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel with the outer skin facing down and giving it a firm squeeze to release oils. Run the peel around the rim of the glass and drop it into the drink as garnish.

7

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip slowly to enjoy the rye-forward profile balanced by the sweet vermouth and bitters.
