Whiskey Base

1

Measure and pour

Pour 8 oz (approximately one standard 750 ml bottle) of Blanton's Barrel Proof into a decanter or leave in the bottle. This recipe scales the bottle to multiple servings for sharing or tasting; for a single serving, use 2 oz bourbon instead.

Optional Water & Ice

2

Decide on dilution

Barrel-proof bourbon is high-proof and concentrated. Decide whether you'll taste neat, add a few drops of water to open aromas, or dilute to drinking strength. For tasting, place 2 oz bourbon in a Glencairn and add 1–4 drops (about 0.5–2 ml) of filtered water at a time until aromas open. For drinking, add 0.5–1 part water to 4 parts bourbon (for example, 2 oz bourbon + 0.5 oz water).

3

Ice service (optional)

If serving on the rocks, place a large ice sphere or 1–2 large cubes in a rocks glass. Pour 2 oz bourbon over the ice. Stir gently once with a spoon to chill and slightly dilute (10–15 seconds). If using small cubes, expect faster dilution—stir 5–8 seconds.

Garnish

4

Express the orange peel

Cut a 1-inch wide strip of orange peel (avoid too much pith). Hold it over the glass with the peel skin-side down and give it a firm squeeze to express the oils onto the surface of the spirit. Optionally run the peel's rim around the glass and drop it in as garnish.

Serving & Tasting Notes

5

Serve immediately. For a tasting format, pour 1–2 oz per person in Glencairn glasses. Smell first (no swirl), then take a small sip and let it coat your palate. Note flavors such as caramel, vanilla, baked oak, spice, dried fruit, and heat from the high proof. Adjust with a few drops of water to reveal additional layers. Record impressions in a tasting notebook if desired.

Cleanup

6

Return unused spirit to the bottle and cap tightly. Rinse glassware with warm water and allow to dry.
