Method
Affogato
Chill serving glass (optional)
Place the demitasse or small serving glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes before assembling to help the ice cream last longer when the hot espresso is poured.
Prepare espresso
Brew one fresh shot (about 25–30 ml) of espresso using an espresso machine or stovetop espresso maker. If you don't have espresso, brew 30–40 ml of very strong coffee. Serve immediately while piping hot.
Scoop ice cream
Place two level scoops of high-quality vanilla ice cream into the chilled demitasse or small serving glass. Pack gently so the scoops sit snugly but keep some texture.
Optional liqueur
If using hazelnut liqueur (or another flavored liqueur), drizzle 1 teaspoon over the ice cream now so the flavor integrates beneath the espresso.
Pour espresso
Hold the hot espresso shot about 1–2 inches above the ice cream and pour directly over the scoops. Pour slowly and evenly so the espresso briefly warms the top of the ice cream and creates a delicious mix of melted cream and coffee.
Garnish and serve
Immediately sprinkle dark chocolate shavings and/or toasted almond slices over the top if using. Serve right away with a small spoon so the diner can enjoy the contrast of hot coffee and cold ice cream.
Equipment care
Rinse the espresso portafilter or stovetop components promptly after use to prevent coffee oils from drying. Wash the glass and spoon after serving.
