Cocktail

Method

Prepare Glass & Garnish

1

Chill glass

Place a highball or copa glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill it with ice and water while you prepare other components to thoroughly chill the glass.

2

Prepare basil

Gently clap 2 basil leaves between your palms once to release aromatics (do not bruise heavily). Reserve 2 additional whole leaves for garnish.

3

Optional express oil

If using the grapefruit peel, hold it skin-side down about 4–6 inches above the glass and give it a firm twist to express oils over the glass rim and surface of the future drink. Rub peel around rim if desired and discard.

Build the Cocktail

4

Discard any ice/water from the chilled glass. Add the large ice cube(s) or sphere to the glass so the drink stays cold without quick dilution.

5

Pour 2 oz Roku gin over the ice.

6

Lightly bruise the remaining 2 basil leaves by gently pressing them between thumb and forefinger and drop them into the glass on top of the ice. This will infuse subtle basil aroma without overpowering the gin.

7

Carefully pour 4 oz chilled premium tonic down the inside of the glass (over the back of a bar spoon if you want to preserve carbonation and create a layered look). Pour slowly to avoid excessive foam.

8

Give the drink one gentle stir (2–3 revolutions) with a bar spoon to integrate gin and tonic while keeping fizz.

Garnish & Serve

9

Place the dehydrated grapefruit wheel on the rim or float it on the surface of the drink. If you used the optional grapefruit express oil, align the peel direction so the expressed oils are over the drink.

10

Finish by tucking the 2 reserved whole basil leaves gently alongside the grapefruit wheel for visual contrast and aroma.

11

Serve immediately with a short straw or coaster. Advise the drinker to inhale basil aroma before sipping to appreciate the herbaceous notes.
