Prep
Remove King's Hawaiian rolls from package and slice each roll horizontally. If using a small loaf, cut into 4 equal sandwich-sized pieces and slice each horizontally. Set aside.
Rinse and dry lettuce leaves. Slice tomato into 4 even slices. Peel and slice red onion into thin rings. Keep vegetables chilled until assembly.
Divide ground beef into two equal portions (approximately 8 oz each). Form each portion into a loose patty about 4 inches in diameter and slightly larger than the bun. Make a shallow dimple in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent doming while cooking. Season both sides of patties evenly with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
Cook bacon & toast buns
Cook burgers & melt cheese
Flip patties and immediately top each with 1 slice of American cheese. Cook another 3–4 minutes for medium (adjust time for preferred doneness). During the last 30–60 seconds, cover the pan with a lid to help cheese melt evenly and to finish cooking. Internal temperature should be 160°F (71°C) for well done.
Assemble burgers
If using condiments, spread mayonnaise on the bottom half of each toasted roll and mustard/ketchup on the top half as desired.
Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom bun, then a tomato slice. Transfer one cheese-topped patty onto each bun. Top each patty with 2 strips of cooked bacon and a few rings of red onion.
Finish with the top half of the King's Hawaiian roll. Press lightly to set. Serve immediately while hot.
