Method

Sandwich

1

Prepare bread

Lay two slices of bread flat on a clean work surface. Spread mayonnaise evenly on one side of one slice. Spread softened butter evenly on one side of the other slice (butter side will face the pan if grilling, or will face out if serving cold).

2

Assemble sandwich

Place the slice of cheese on top of the mayonnaise-spread bread slice. Fold or layer the two slices of ham evenly over the cheese so they cover it. Top with the second slice of bread, buttered side out.

3

Cook (optional - grilled)

Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat (about 325–350°F / moderate). Place the assembled sandwich in the skillet, buttered side down. Press gently with a spatula and cook 2–3 minutes until the bottom is golden brown. Flip the sandwich and cook another 2–3 minutes until the other side is golden and the cheese has melted. If the bread browns too quickly before the cheese melts, lower heat slightly and cover the pan for 30–60 seconds to help the cheese melt.

4

Serve (cold option)

If serving cold, simply slice the assembled sandwich in half diagonally and serve immediately.

5

Slice and cool

After cooking, transfer the sandwich to a plate and allow to rest 1 minute to avoid burns. Slice in half diagonally or into small finger-friendly pieces for a child and serve warm or at room temperature.

6

Arrange apple slices and baby carrots in a small container or on the plate. Include a small cup with ketchup for dipping if desired.
