Method

Preparation

1

Gather equipment

Collect a 32 oz (1 quart) carafe or thermal server, a coffee brewer or French press that can accommodate 32 oz, a kettle, a coffee grinder (if using whole beans), a scale or measuring cup, and a spoon or stirrer.

2

Measure and grind (if needed)

If using whole beans, weigh or measure 0.5 cup (roughly 55–60 g depending on bean density) and grind to a coarse, even texture suitable for your brewing method (French press/coarse filter). If using pre-ground coffee, measure 0.5 cup of coarsely ground coffee.

Brewing

3

Preheat

Pour a small amount of the hot water into the empty 32 oz carafe and into the brewer to preheat them, then discard the water. This helps maintain brewing temperature.

4

Add coffee

Place the measured 0.5 cup coarsely ground coffee into the brewer (or French press). Spread it evenly to level the bed.

5

Bloom (if pour-over or manual)

Pour about 3–4 oz of hot water (just off boil, 95–96°C / 203–205°F) evenly over the grounds to saturate them. Let sit for 30–45 seconds to release gases and improve extraction.

6

Complete the pour / add remaining water

Slowly pour the remaining hot water (to total 32 oz) over the grounds in a steady spiral for pour-over, or add the remaining water to the French press and stir gently to ensure all grounds are wet. Aim to finish pouring within 2–3 minutes of starting the bloom for pour-over; for French press, add water and stir immediately.

7

Brew time

If using a pour-over/filter method, allow water to completely drip through into the preheated carafe (total contact time ~3–4 minutes). If using a French press, place the lid with plunger up and let steep for 4 minutes.

8

Plunge / remove filter

For French press, slowly press the plunger down with steady pressure and immediately pour the brewed coffee into the preheated 32 oz carafe to stop extraction. For pour-over, remove the filter and discard grounds.

Finishing

9

Serve or hold

Serve the brewed 32 oz of coffee immediately, or place the carafe on a warmer or use a thermal carafe to keep it hot. Stir gently before serving to ensure consistency if necessary.

10

Optional additions

Add sugar, milk, or cream to taste per cup when serving. For guests, provide milk/cream and sweeteners alongside the carafe.

11

Storage / leftover

If you won't drink all 32 oz within 30–45 minutes, transfer coffee to a sealed thermal carafe and store at moderate temperature; avoid refrigeration as it alters flavor. For best flavor, consume within 2–4 hours.
