Cake Preparation

Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

Make the Stout Mixture
In a medium saucepan, combine the stout beer and unsalted butter. Heat over medium heat until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Allow to cool slightly.

Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt.

Bake the Cake
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cool the Cakes
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Serve the Cake
To serve, place one layer of the chocolate stout cake on a plate. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Add the second layer on top, and then another scoop of ice cream. Garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.
