Method

Cake Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Make the Stout Mixture

In a medium saucepan, combine the stout beer and unsalted butter. Heat over medium heat until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and whisk in the cocoa powder until smooth. Allow to cool slightly.

  3. 3

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking soda, and salt.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixtures

In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla extract. Add the stout mixture to the egg mixture and stir until combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cakes

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

Serving Preparation

  1. 7

    Serve the Cake

To serve, place one layer of the chocolate stout cake on a plate. Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Add the second layer on top, and then another scoop of ice cream. Garnish with chocolate shavings if desired.
