Method
Citrus-Herbal Base
- 1
Juice and Sweeten
In a medium mixing pitcher, combine the fresh orange juice, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and lime juice. Add the honey or agave syrup. Stir vigorously until the sweetener is fully dissolved into the citrus juices.
- 2
Bruise the Herbs
Lightly bruise the mint and basil leaves between your palms or using the back of a spoon just enough to release their essential oils (do not pulverize). Add the bruised leaves to the citrus-sweet mixture and gently press them against the side of the pitcher with a wooden spoon 6–8 times to infuse flavor.
- 3
Let the mixture rest at room temperature for 5–10 minutes to allow the herbs and citrus to marry. Taste and adjust sweetness with an additional 1 tsp of honey or agave if desired.
Sparkle & Balance
- 4
Strain and Chill
Place a fine-mesh sieve over a clean pitcher or bowl and strain the citrus-herb mixture to remove the spent herbs and any pulp if you prefer a smoother drink. Press gently on the solids to extract remaining liquid. Discard solids. Refrigerate strained base for 10 minutes if not using immediately.
- 5
Add Sparkle
When ready to serve, add the chilled sparkling water and the chilled ginger beer (or ginger ale) to the strained citrus-herbal base. Stir gently to combine, taking care not to flatten the carbonation.
- 6
If using, add 1–2 dashes of Angostura bitters to each pitcher for added aroma depth (note: bitters contain trace alcohol but are used in tiny amounts; omit if you require zero alcohol). Stir once gently.
Garnish & Serve
- 7
Prepare Glasses
Fill four serving glasses evenly with ice cubes (about 1/2 cup ice per glass).
- 8
Pour the beverage evenly into the prepared glasses, leaving a small top space for garnishes.
- 9
Garnish each glass with an orange wheel (slide onto the rim), a lime wedge, and a sprig of fresh mint. Optionally give the mint a light slap between your hands before placing it on the drink to amplify aroma.
- 10
Serve immediately so the drink remains effervescent and aromatic.
