Cocktail

Method

Maple Simple Syrup

  1. 1

    Make maple syrup

Combine 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup and 3 tablespoons hot water in a small jar or bowl. Stir until fully combined and slightly cooled. Transfer to a sealed container and chill if not using immediately. Yields about 6 tablespoons (3 oz); use 1/2 oz per cocktail.

Cocktail Preparation

  1. 2

    Build the cocktail

Place a mixing glass or old fashioned glass in front of you. Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters and 1/2 oz maple simple syrup to the glass.

  2. 3

Pour 2 oz Michter's Bourbon (or your chosen bourbon) into the glass.

  3. 4

Add one large ice cube (or enough ice to chill without over-diluting).

  4. 5

Stir gently for about 20-30 seconds (about 20-30 rotations) until the drink is well chilled and slightly diluted. If using an old fashioned glass, you can stir in the glass; if using a mixing glass, stir with a bar spoon and strain over a large ice cube in a rocks glass.

  5. 6

Express the orange peel: hold the peel skin-side toward the drink about 2–3 inches above the glass and give it a sharp twist to spray oils onto the surface. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

  6. 7

Serve immediately. Optionally, garnish with a second orange twist or a brandied cherry if desired.
