Cocktail
Optional / Equipment & finishing
Method
Cocktail
- 1
Prepare glass
Place a large ice cube or several fresh ice cubes into a rocks glass and set aside to chill while you build the cocktail.
- 2
Build
In a mixing glass, combine 1 oz mezcal, 1 oz sweet vermouth (or amaro-forward sweet vermouth), and 1 oz Campari. Add 2 dashes of orange bitters.
- 3
- 4
Strain
Using a strainer, pour the chilled cocktail over the prepared large ice cube in the rocks glass.
- 5
Express and garnish
Take an orange peel and hold it skin-side down over the drink. Give the peel a firm twist to express oils onto the surface, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass as a garnish.
- 6
Serve
Serve immediately. Sip slowly to appreciate the smoky mezcal balanced with the bitter-sweet Campari and the botanical notes from the vermouth and bitters.
Optional adjustments
- 7
If you prefer a more pronounced amaro character, substitute the 1 oz sweet vermouth with 1 oz of a lighter Amaro (such as Amaro Montenegro) and reduce Campari to 3/4 oz, then taste and adjust.
- 8
For a slightly sweeter/orange-forward version, add 1/4 oz simple syrup or use an orange liqueur splash, but be cautious — this moves the drink away from the classic bitter profile.
