Method
Porridge Base
- 1
Combine liquids and oats
In a small saucepan, combine 1.5 cups milk and 0.5 cup water. Stir in 1 cup rolled oats and 1/4 teaspoon salt before heating so oats are evenly distributed.
- 2
Cook gently
Place saucepan over medium-low heat. Bring to a gentle simmer, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Once simmering, reduce heat to low and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds, until oats have softened and mixture has thickened to a creamy porridge consistency.
- 3
Adjust consistency
If porridge becomes too thick, stir in small splashes (1 tablespoon at a time) of milk until you reach a child-friendly, spoonable texture. If too thin, simmer 1–2 minutes longer while stirring.
Sweetener & Flavor
- 4
Remove saucepan from heat. Stir in 1 tablespoon maple syrup (or honey if appropriate), 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Taste and adjust sweetness, adding up to 1 tablespoon more sweetener if desired.
Add-ins / Toppings (optional, kid-friendly)
- 5
Add fruit for texture and nutrition
If using mashed banana, stir 1/2 cup mashed banana into the porridge now to sweeten and thicken naturally. Alternatively, fold in 1/4 cup applesauce for a milder fruit flavor. For fresh berries, spoon them on top so they stay whole and colorful.
- 6
Add nut butter or seeds
If using nut or seed butter, swirl 1 teaspoon into the warm porridge to add creaminess and protein. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon chia seeds on top if you want a little extra fiber and omega-3s (note: chia will thicken the porridge if left to sit).
- 7
Cool for kids
Let porridge cool for 2–3 minutes to a safe, warm (not hot) temperature before serving to children. Stir and test temperature yourself before offering to a child.
