Method

Protein & Eggs

  1. 1

    Cook sausage

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the sausage and cook, turning occasionally, for about 8–10 minutes until browned all over and cooked through (internal temp 71°C / 160°F). If the sausage is thin, 6–8 minutes may be enough. Remove the sausage to a warm plate and keep covered.

  2. 2

    Cook bacon

In the same skillet (drain excess fat to one side if there is a lot), lay the bacon slice in and cook over medium heat for 2–4 minutes per side until crispness reaches child's preference. Transfer bacon to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain.

  3. 3

    Scramble eggs

While bacon cooks, crack the eggs into a small bowl, add 2 tbs milk, a pinch of salt (about 1/8 tsp) and a light grinding of pepper. Whisk until combined and slightly frothy. Wipe skillet if needed so there is only a little fat left, then add 1/2 tbs butter and melt over low-medium heat. Pour in the egg mixture. Let eggs set briefly at the edges, then gently push cooked edges toward the center with a spatula, folding and stirring occasionally until soft curds form and eggs are just set but still moist, about 1–2 minutes. Remove from heat; the residual heat will finish them. Serve immediately with the sausage and bacon.

Beans & Bread

  1. 4

    Heat baked beans

Place 1/2 cup baked beans in a small saucepan. Warm over low-medium heat, stirring occasionally, for 3–4 minutes until gently simmering. Alternatively, microwave in a microwave-safe bowl for 1–1.5 minutes, stirring halfway, until hot. Keep warm.

  2. 5

    Toast bread

While beans heat, toast 1 slice of bread to desired doneness in a toaster or under a broiler. Spread remaining 1/2 tbs butter on the hot toast if desired.

Plating & Beverage

  1. 6

Assemble the plate: place the sausage and bacon beside the scrambled eggs, add the warmed baked beans in a small ramekin or on the plate, and include the buttered toast. Pour 150 ml of the child's choice of orange juice or milk into a cup. Let food cool slightly to a safe temperature for the child (test temperature of eggs and beans). Serve immediately.

  2. 7

Notes: If preparing for a younger child, cut sausage and toast into bite-sized pieces and chop bacon to avoid choking hazards. Adjust seasoning to taste; omit pepper for very young children.
