Method

Preparation

1

Chill glass

Place a lowball (old fashioned) glass in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or fill it with ice and cold water while you prepare the cocktail to ensure it is nicely chilled.

2

Combine spirits and modifiers

In a mixing glass filled with plenty of ice, pour 2 oz blended whiskey, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.25 oz orange liqueur, 0.25 oz simple syrup, and add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

3

Stir

Stir the mixture briskly with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 full turns) until well chilled and slightly diluted. This both chills and integrates the ingredients.

Serve & Garnish

4

Prepare glass

Discard the ice/water from the chilled lowball glass (if used) and place one large clear ice cube into the glass.

5

Strain

Using a julep or hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred spirit mixture over the large ice cube in the lowball glass.

6

Top & finish

Gently pour 2 oz chilled club soda down the side of the glass to create a light highball-style lift without excessively diluting. Give the drink one gentle stir (1–2 turns) to incorporate the soda.

7

Garnish

Express an orange twist over the drink to release oils, rub the rim with the peel if desired, and drop the twist into the glass.
