For the rim & garnish
Method
Prep the glass
Rim the glass
Rub the lemon wedge around the rim of a tall highball or pint glass to moisten it. Spread the sea salt or celery salt on a small plate and dip the moistened rim into the salt to coat evenly.
Mix the cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker or mixing glass halfway with ice.
Add 2 oz vodka to the shaker.
Pour in 4 oz tomato juice and 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice.
Add 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce, 3 dashes hot sauce, and 1 tsp prepared horseradish if using.
Season with 0.25 tsp celery salt, a few cranks (about 3) of freshly ground black pepper, and 0.25 tsp smoked paprika if using.
Gently fill the shaker the rest of the way with ice (do not overfill).
Stir the mixture briskly for 12–20 seconds (about 20–30 full spoon turns) to chill and slightly dilute the drink while maintaining a smooth texture. Avoid shaking vigorously — stirring preserves the tomato juice texture and prevents foam.
Assemble & garnish
Strain the mixed cocktail into the prepared glass filled with fresh ice (large cubes preferred).
Give the drink a gentle stir in the glass to integrate any rim salt flavors.
Garnish with 1 celery stalk and a cocktail pick loaded with your chosen garnish (olive, pickled bean, or lemon wedge). Serve immediately.
